Grant Description
Fellowships of $10,000 to Iowa artists, filmmakers, musicians, and creative writers to promote professional development. Applicants must submit an intent to apply form prior to applying. Funding is intended to assist creative individuals working across a range of disciplines who demonstrate a commitment to contributing to the vitality of the arts within the state.

The Iowa Artist Fellowship provides support to individual artists, including visual and performing artists, filmmakers, musicians, and creative writers who demonstrate exceptional creativity in the arts and a commitment to contributing to the vitality of the arts in Iowa. The program advances the artistic careers of Iowans through funding and professional development. Fellowship recipients exemplify the following program priorities:

  • Excellence and Innovation: Artwork achieves unique artistic vision through highly creative means in concept and form exemplifying excellence or innovation in the field.
  • Career Readiness: Artist is at a pivotal stage in artistic career and committed to advancing artistic practice.
  • Public Value: Artist contributes to the vitality of arts in Iowa by actively engaging Iowans through artistic practice.

Program Benefits:

Professional Development: Fellows convene regularly during the fellowship period to receive professional development opportunities to elevate their artistic careers, including:

  • Iowa Artist Professional Development Program – Fellows are required to participate in the Iowa Artist Professional Development Program. These virtual workshops, coaching sessions and an in-person retreat will integrate business management, strategic planning, fundraising, communication, marketing and promotion training for artistic careers.
  • Panelist Program – Fellows may be asked to serve as panelists on the Iowa Arts Council‘s review panels over the course of the fellowship year. The panelist program provides the opportunity for fellows to develop their grant writing skills by offering expert citizen advice on arts activity taking place across the state.

Promotion: The Iowa Arts Council seeks to promote Iowa Artist Fellows throughout their Fellowship period. Iowa Artist Fellows will also have opportunities to participate in events to introduce their work to new audiences.

Additional Eligibility Criteria
Eligible applicants must meet all the following requirements. Individuals who do not meet these requirements are not eligible to apply.
• Individual artist, including visual or performing artist, filmmaker, musician or creative writer
• Current, full-time Iowa resident with permanent address in Iowa
• Legal Iowa resident as defined by Iowa Code 422.4 and Iowa Administrative Code 701.38.17 (422)
• 25 years of age or older
• Full-time Iowa resident physically located in Iowa since February 1, 2021
• Full-time Iowa resident physically located in Iowa for the duration of the funding period

Eligible applicants to the Iowa Artist Fellowship must be originating, non-interpretive artists working in any artistic discipline(s) including visual arts, performing arts, filmmaking, music or creative writing.
• Originating artists (e.g. visual artists, playwrights, filmmakers, composers, choreographers, creative writers) create original works of art.
• Interpretive artists (e.g. dancers, actors, performers) perform or interpret original works of art of others.

The Iowa Artist Fellowship is not an award to support a specific art project or an award of recognition for lifetime achievements, nor is it an award for artists just beginning their careers.

Ineligible applicants include the following:
• Past recipients of the Iowa Artist Fellowship
• Individuals enrolled in any type of undergraduate or graduate degree granting program on February 1, 2024
• Individuals who have been residing out of state for any of the three consecutive years immediately prior to February 1, 2024
• Artist groups, artist collaboratives and artist collectives
• IEDA grantees with a final report outstanding or who have been placed on an IEDA funding moratorium list

Iowa Economic Development Authority employees are ineligible for funding.

Recipients of Iowa Arts Council administered funds may not utilize awarded funds for lobbying or political advocacy purposes.

Pre-Application Information
Application to the Iowa Artist Fellowship is a two-step process. All applicants must submit an intent to apply form. Applicants who are determined eligible for consideration will be invited to submit a full application.

- February 15, 2024 | Fiscal Year 2025 Intent to Apply Form Deadline. The deadline to submit an Intent to Apply Form is 11:59 p.m. on February 15, 2024. Applicants will be notified if they are eligible to submit a full application by February 23, 2024.
- April 1, 2024 | Fiscal Year 2025 Application Deadline. The deadline to submit the full application is 11:59 p.m. on April 1, 2024, for the funding period of July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025.
- April 2024 | Funding Decision Notification. Typically, applicants are notified of funding decisions within four weeks after the application deadline. 
- July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025 | Funding Period. The fellowship year will run from July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025.
- August 1, 2025 | Final Report Deadline. Fellowship recipients are required to complete a final report, in form and content to be specified by IEDA, by 11:59 p.m. on August 1, 2025.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate why now is the appropriate time in their artistic career for the one-time award.

- Applicants may only receive one Iowa Arts Council administered grant award per state fiscal year, regardless of grant program, with noted exceptions
- Applicants may not submit more than one application during a single grant deadline or cycle regardless of grant program

Fellows are awarded a $10,000 grant over the fellowship award period.

Term of Contract
All project activities and incurred expenses must occur within the eligible funding period of July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025.
