Grants to Iowa emergency responders for educational programming to the public and for equipment purchases. The primary focus of the funding is intended for programs and equipment related to the dangers of fireworks. Additional funding is available for equipment used in response to other fire and/or medical emergencies.

Grant priority funding is two-tier:

  1. Top Priority Tier:
    1. Applications which seek to provide education into fireworks laws, local ordinances related to fireworks, education materials related to fireworks safety or the prevention of fireworks injuries.
      1. Examples:
        1. Consumer fireworks public safety announcements (radio, TV, social media)
        2. School safety education packets
        3. Education on burn first aid treatment
  2. Second Tier Consideration:
    1. Applications which seek equipment used to permit or enforce licensing and site enforcement specifically related to the regulation of consumer fireworks.
    2. Applications which are related to data collection and research as to injury trends and incidents related to consumer fireworks in Iowa.
      • Examples: Computer and peripheral equipment for department staff to complete site inspections
    3. Applications for equipment which will only be used in response to consumer fireworks emergencies.
      • Examples: Clothing and equipment for wildland/grass fire fighting
    4. Applications which seek medical supplies for the treatment of fireworks related injuries.
      • Examples: Burn treatment first aid kits
    5. Applications which seek equipment used in response to other fire and/or medical emergencies.
      1. Examples:
        • Bunker/turnout gear
        • First aid kits
        • Specialized hose and nozzle equipment

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Authorized applicants: Any local fire protection service provider or local emergency medical service provider in the state of Iowa who complies with NFIRS or EMS reporting requirements of the state may apply for grant funds from the local fire protection and emergency medical service providers grant program. Special programs within a fire department or EMS department may apply for grant monies so long as they are authorized to do so by their respective department.

Pre-Application Information:

The period for 2022-2023 is open. The 2022-2023 grant application will be accepted through June 30, 2022.
