Grants of up to $50,000 to USA, Canada, and International emerging investigators to promote the pursuit of a career in neurological disorder research. A letter of intent must be submitted prior to applying. Underrepresented minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. Funding is intended to encourage young clinical and scientific investigators to pursue a career in the field of ataxia research.

It is NAF's hope that ataxia research will be invigorated by the work of young, talented individuals supported by this award. Applications for any form of ataxia, including the SCAs, are accepted for this award. This award will be made to the sponsoring institution and can be used as salary support or for direct research expenses.

The sponsoring institution must agree in writing to the following provision: the young investigator (MD or PhD) must be free to allocate approximately half time (50%) for ataxia related research.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The average funds granted will be up to $50,000.

Term of Contract:

Awards are for one year only. The term of the proposed project should be from March 1, 2022, to February 28, 2023.

PI Qualifications:
- Must have attained an MD or PhD degree
- Must have an appointment as a junior faculty member, senior post-doc, or clinical fellow
- Clinicians must have finished their residency no more than 5 years prior to applying
- PhDs must be no more than 5 years from the end of completion of post-doc training
- The sponsoring institution must agree in writing to the following provision: the Young Investigator must be able to allocate approximately half time (50%) for Ataxia related research.
- Underrepresented minorities strongly encouraged to apply.

For all grants, applications are accepted from U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens. Applications from for-profit organizations, non-profit organizations, public or private institutions, and institutions both inside and outside the United States will be considered.

Awards are for direct costs only and cannot be used for indirect costs or institutional overhead.

October 26, 2021 - Deadline for full application. Application is not available until LOI has been approved.

Letter of Intent:
Using the proposalCENTRAL online portal, please submit a full title and a one-page abstract of your research proposal, on or before September 28, 2021. You will receive an email when your Letter of Intent is approved, then you will be able to access the proposalCENTRAL portal to submit your application.

To utilize the proposalCENTRAL online portal to submit letters of intent and applications, a user account needs to be created. Use this weblink https://proposalcentral.com to create an account. Creating an account can be done any time prior to submitting a Letter of Intent to apply.

Review by Medical Research Advisory Board takes place late December through early January. Written notification of awards will be sent in late February 2022.

Checks or electronic transfers will be issued in February and sent directly to the institution of the funded researcher named in the application.
